A flat tire can happen anytime—whether you’re driving to work or heading out on a road trip. Knowing how to change a flat tire can save you time, money, and frustration. At MillTire, your trusted tire supplier in Calgary, we want every driver to be prepared for unexpected roadside issues. Here’s a simple, step-by-step tire replacement guide to help you get back on the road safely.
Spare tire (fully inflated)
Jack
Lug wrench
Vehicle owner’s manual
Wheel wedges or bricks
Flashlight (if it’s dark)
Reflective triangle or flares for safety
Pull over to a flat, solid surface away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights and apply the parking brake.
Place wheel wedges behind the tires (opposite of the flat) to prevent rolling. If you’re on a hill, this step is crucial.
If your vehicle has one, use the flat end of your lug wrench to remove the cover.
Turn each lug nut counterclockwise just enough to break the resistance—do not fully remove them yet.
Consult your owner’s manual for the correct jack point, then raise the vehicle until the flat tire is about 6 inches off the ground.
Now, fully unscrew the lug nuts and carefully remove the flat tire. Set the nuts aside where they won’t roll away.
Align the spare tire with the lug bolts and push it in place. Screw the lug nuts back on by hand.
Lower the vehicle slightly so the tire touches the ground. Use the wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern.
Once the tire is secure, lower the jack fully and remove it. Give each lug nut a final firm tightening.
If it fits your spare, go ahead and snap it back into place.
Check your spare tire regularly—it should always be inflated and ready.
Get the flat tire repaired or replaced ASAP. Don’t drive long distances on a donut or compact spare.
If you’re unsure or unsafe, call roadside assistance.
